The Next Step with Hands and Feet

Recently I sat down with the editor and owner of a Christian newspaper. We discussed many different topics but when we hit on one that was close to my heart, I really got going. I think you can recognize someone’s passion by the way they talk about it. I began to talk about the church and the call to be the hands and feet of Jesus.

To make a long story short, the owner and editor of the paper has given me the opportunity to contribute a column to the paper entitled Hands and Feet. I am excited… Continue

Paul, Galatians and the Poor

All they asked was that we should continue to remember the poor, the very thing I was eager to do. Galatians 2:10

I was preparing for a message on living by the Spirit this past Sunday and I couldn’t help but think about this verse. So matter of fact from Paul isn’t it? In the first part of Galatians he spends time talking about his calling and how it happened and how his theology developed when he discusses his arrival at Jerusalem. He meets with the leaders of the chu… Continue

A prayer

You know John Dobbs is an interesting guy. I would say that no one would even know about this place if it were not for him. He has a wonderful heart and a great sense of humor.

Humor is no where to be found today. He lost his son two days before his graduation. A terrible accident on a strip of highway in Louisiana.

Please keep John, his wife Margaret and all the family in your prayers at this time. I had the honor of meeting his son this year at a workshop in Tulsa, Oklahoma. You could clearl… Continue

How can this work?

Do you know of someone with a passion? No really any passion. I know of a woman who loves to cook so what do you think she is trying to do? She started thinking about all of the students on government supported lunches who will have not free school meal during the summer.

She said to herself, what can we do for these children because often times they go hungry during the summer months. Now it is a daunting task, feeding every child in a community and her church simply doesn't have the resources… Continue

Hands and Feet

I grew up attending a church that stressed that faith was more than just words, it was actions. They talked a lot about the fact that it couldn't be faith only and they used James 2:24. Okay, but it also seems that they used that more to argue theology than anything practical or connected to the text.

In context the verse is talking about actions that help those without. In James 2:14-17 you find that the actions that James is discussing are those that help others in need. He specifically talks… Continue

Thanks for the invitation to participate. I hope to be able to do so soon. This is a busy week for me, but maybe by the weekend I will be able to join in some of the discussions on the forum. I appreciate what you have done in setting this up.

We were serving quite a few people throughout the county until the past couple of years. The rising costs of fuel have cut way back on what we have had available for handing out for food. Second Harvest is the food we purchase for distribution. I am not sure if it is available in all areas or not. We screen clients based on the Federal Poverty Level and use their guidelines. No one will be refused though if they are in need. We do have a few simple applications forms with basic data and ask for verification of address and income. If they do not have it the first time they come in we request they bring it the next time and still give them a food bag. They are allowed to come in for food once a week, The requirements are they must live in the county and that they are not getting food at any other food bank.
For the clothing anyone may come in and get clothes. There is no limit...no guidelines or applications or residential borders. We get all of our clothes through local donations from the community like Goodwill does so we always have lots of clothing. All of our workers are volunteers except we occasionally get a community service worker that for one reason or other has to work off some time for the courts. Most of us have worked there over 5 years now.
